Calculators Power outage food safety
Find the next checkpoint. Time alone cannot tell you whether food is safe.
About 2 minutes You’ll need: appliance, outage hours, closed doors, and freezer fullness

The clock at a glance
These timeframes assume the appliance stays closed. They describe how long the appliance generally retains cold, not a guarantee for every food item or every refrigerator or freezer.
| Checkpoint | General federal guidance | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4 hours | An unopened refrigerator generally keeps food cold for about 4 hours. | Keep doors closed. Stage ice or a cooler if the outage is expected to continue. |
| About 24 hours | A half-full unopened freezer generally holds temperature for about 24 hours. | After this point, package temperature and ice crystals matter more than the clock alone. |
| About 48 hours | A full unopened freezer generally holds temperature for about 48 hours. | Use the freezer thermometer or inspect each package under current FDA/USDA guidance. |
| Power restored | Frozen food with ice crystals or at 40°F / 4°C or below may generally be refrozen or cooked. | Refrigerated perishables need the federal time-and-temperature decision; never taste food to test it. |
Food-safety decisions become more evidence-heavy as the outage continues. Keep doors closed, use appliance thermometers, preserve a colder verified option when available, and move to item-specific federal guidance instead of relying on smell or appearance.
FDA guidance says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours. Keep the door closed, use a thermometer when available, and use current item-specific guidance when the outage exceeds that window or the temperature history is uncertain.
A full unopened freezer generally holds temperature for about 48 hours; a half-full unopened freezer for about 24 hours. When power returns, frozen food that still contains ice crystals or is 40°F / 4°C or below may generally be refrozen or cooked under FDA guidance.
No. Do not use smell, appearance, or tasting as a safety test. Use time, measured temperature, ice-crystal evidence for frozen food, and current FDA/USDA item guidance.
Plan first. Buy what is missing.
Food-safety decisions depend on measured appliance temperatures and shelf-stable fallbacks. These documented examples are not selected from your calculator answers.
