Garage Wildfire Preparation: Doors, Embers and Safe Vehicle Exit

Before wildfire weather, check garage-door weather seals and obvious combustible debris from safe ground; review fuel and storage safety, and confirm how the household can open an automatic door if grid power fails. A garage-door backup battery does not ensure an evacuation route is safe. Hire qualified help for door, ventilation, electrical and fire-separation work, and leave promptly under local orders.

An attached garage can create two different wildfire problems. Embers may enter around a poorly sealed door and ignite combustible materials, while a grid outage can make a powered garage door or gate difficult to operate when a household needs to leave. Address the building and the exit mechanism separately.

This checklist is about the garage during wildfire season. For water at a garage threshold use the distinct garage flood checklist. For actual wildfire alerts and departure use the wildfire household plan.

Ready for Wildfire recommends suitable garage-door seals and checking battery backup. Its broader evacuation guidance discusses vehicle, power and manual operation. Neither is permission to alter spring hardware or fire-rated construction.

Do not create a new hazard with a “seal”

A door gap is not a mandate to plug every ventilation opening. Correct weatherstripping and ember-resistant construction must respect ventilation, moisture, manufacturer clearances, fuel-equipment rules and local fire requirements. Garage-door springs and cables store dangerous energy and require appropriate professional service.

Store flammable liquids only under applicable product labels, building code and local fire guidance. A cluttered garage is not safely fixed by packing gasoline, paint and lithium batteries into an unventilated cabinet.

Plan the human departure path

Write the authorized manual-release instructions from the actual door model and whether a person who needs to leave can use them. Do not practice a release near moving door parts, when springs are damaged or when someone could be trapped. A garage with a functioning battery still may open onto a closed or dangerous road; live official instructions control the route.

If an evacuation notice applies, do not delay departure to move outdoor furniture, repair a seal or test a battery. Use the household’s safe alternate exit and call for help if access is blocked.
